This journal follows the training and experiences of Juju, a border collie bitch puppy as we prepare her for a career in agility from a physio and canine fitness trainers perspective. The diary will be delivered through a private Facebook group with exclusive access to members of this course. Regular videos, photos and posts will be posted in the group with tips, advice and reasoning behind what I am doing and when. The focus will be on the fitness and conditioning needs of a sporting puppy, but will include snippets of all the training we do. Where appropriate, instructional videos will be posted to enable you to work with your own dogs and in some cases, instructional videos/lessons will be created within the course module on this website, so they are readily accessible for use. All members are welcome to ask any questions or request further clarification on any of the posts within the group.
Throughout this diary we will be discussing what I consider to be appropriate exercise and training at different age and puppy stages for my puppy along with reasons why. I hope to back up my approach with evidence, including x-rays showing growth plate development.
There will be regular posts and updates throughout Juju’s puppyhood into adolescence and up to her first competitive agility run.
This is a live course that will continue to evolve and develop as I progress with Juju’s training. In addition to the Facebook group there will be additional information/links/video and tutorials added to the curriculum here on the website. The following sections will be included and added to as we continue through the Juju’s journey.
- Puppy Development – this section will discuss the developing puppy, including exercise, growth plates and risks
- General Puppy Training/Life skill – this section will include tutorials and videos related to general puppy training
- Conditioning the Puppy Athlete – here we will discuss conditioning needs of the puppy in preparation for canine sports.
- Nutrition and Performance – here I hope to provide links and useful information relating to feeding and how it can affect performance and development. I will not tell you what to feed your puppy!
- References – throughout this journey I will use numerous references (Text/Websites/Videos) in my training plans. Here I will share any useful items and links to relevant research. There will also be links to partner sites that I think will be of interest.
Additional topics and sections may develop dependent on questions/feedback within the Facebook Group
